Internet Speed & Good Advice From Scott Kirsner on Pitching Boston.com
Kirsner points out at the beginning of his post today that in one year “two things I notice changing about the way I choose to cover things” - 1. On his blog he now covers mainly big, almost-ready-to-break news stories THAT HAVE NOT YET BEEN COVERED. 2. Embargoes no longer interest him as they will surely leak out somewhere online before an embargo date. Both of these reporting shifts in the way Scott handles news leads are a reaction to the increasing speed with which stories make and spread across news sites and social media.
Good marketers and media relations practitioners have been adjusting to new forms of media for decades - Radio, TV, The initial Internet all forced marketers to approach and work with media in new ways; Now the big difference is time shift. Instead of decades, today it’s years or even months in which roles and tactics must be evaluated and adjusted to fit the new rules and time frames that reporters like Scott Kirsner race up against. Great marketers and publicists understand this, have already made the adjustment and approach a reporter like Scott only when they know a story is fresh and will do everything in their power to make certain the story stays locked down until they see it post to Boston.com.
